Offshore oil deposits exploited since the early 1970s have made Cameroon one of the most prosperous nations in tropical Africa. Oil refining and the production of crude oil products lead the nation's industries.

But Cameroon faces challenges common to other developing African nations: inefficient bureaucracy, an unreliable legal system, and poor infrastructure. Employment regulations are costly and restrictive, and firing a worker is difficult. Business licenses are difficult to obtain.

The government is actively encouraging foreign investment and has pledged to make reforms which can ease foreign investment.
Foreign investment in Cameroon is limited, largely due to the problem of corruption, and much remains to be done in order to improve the overall business environment, investors are permitted to dispose of their property via sale, transfer, or physical repatriation of moveable property.

Cameroonian law provides both foreign and domestic investors with property rights protection that comply with international standards and does not discriminate between foreign and domestic companies. Unreliability, non-transparency and inefficiency in the judiciary all serve to slow down legal processes.

The government recognizes the right of private ownership, but a dysfunctional judiciary, inadequate definitions of property rights, and widespread inconsistencies in government decision-making limit property rights in practice.
